The four cyclist started out in Wilmington, Delaware around 4AM and was following google maps for highway 40 out of Baltimore, Maryland into Arlington, VA but mistakenly found themselves on the Interstate of 70/40 before being intercepted by the State Police, who “after half dozen phone calls from passing motorists noticed the cyclists on the interstate,” gave escort service to Route 97/Georgia Ave in Eldersburg, Maryland.
Earlier the group of eight members of the Major Taylor Cycling Club of New Jersey plus one SAG support were separated on their second leg of a 900 mile journey from Flemington, New Jersey to Atlanta.
Here we were rolling along good through most of Maryland, including crossing the Susquehanna, rolling through “Charm City.” traveling along route 40 West. All was well until the 70/40 split came. The McCarther’s were on their tandem Dave, “Sette” and I we were pedaling away at a pretty good clip on Interstate 70. As we got to what look like a decent pull over spot to check on Angelo, Who I call Sette, that’s the name of his bike, we saw him off the back, Then Dave Mullens turned back, looked and said “gee I hope that’s not Angelo with the cop car way back there.” Mullens, a math teacher, pointed out.
Well then it dawned on us that cars were whizzing by us pretty faster than before. As we waited for “Sette” James checked his google maps which confirmed we were on Route 40 and heading in the right direction to Arlington, but what Google failed to mention is that 40 runs concurrent with I-70. Hmmm!
Well sure enough the Maryland State Police brought “Sette” up to us. He got out of his car and we had a friendly discussion on our whereabouts and convinced us “that you no longer on MD. Route 40 but on the inte
