We left DC around 5 am. It was now or never I was leaving my personal support staff behind. When McCarthur said to me “Ok Brian lead us out of here.” I thought about heading back to my brother Al’s house with some excuse. But sometime in one’s life the 3-2 breaker is gonna come.
Took a deep breath and realized I had seven other souls to get across the the memorial bridge without missing a beat. The task wasn’t daunting it’s just that I was more familiar with the 14th street bridge and when I left DC last there were no bike paths other than the Memorial.
Well is was a short and successful lead. From there Lewis took over and put us on a trail and then on to RT 29. The same route 29 in Jersey.

While for some of 29 it was perfectly legal like the rest of our course. Time slipped away from us. We were trying to make it to Zion’s Crossing, VA by at least 7 pm at the intersection if route 15 and I-64 where our hotel was.
Somewhere after the highway divided and got of track again with our friendly neighborhood “Google Maps.” We found route 15 after roaming off course on 29 for over and hour.
McCarthur Ultimately got us back on track but that was around sunset with about 35 miles to go and about 1,500 feet of climbing to Zion’s Crossing.
