Day 8 was a bit interesting the McCarthur’s Sowell, Mullens, and fresh leg’s Byron went on up down the road and left myself, Lewis, Fudge and Stewart to fend for ourselves, while we were averaging about 13 miles/hour while they were upwards about 16 mph climbing nearly 5,000 feet.
McCarther said we’ll meet up in Abbeville nearly 40 miles from the morning start in Clinton. As we approached Abbeville there were no signs of James and the crew off the front. So as the town started fading and the highway became more evident that there are no more folks to see but my front nose. I became concerned, because knowing James there was his idiom of “come on let’s get on up down the road.” which interpreted means James will stop if you ask, but if he doesn’t here anything the peloton is moving.
However between Abbeville and Calhoun Falls a stranger wanted to know what was going on with us (cyclist). Not every day or month or year do they see cyclists and black cyclist roll through there neck of the woods. So as the stranger drove by in his car with his window down he said “bless you all and may God keep you”with his hand stretched out of the window as he drove off.
Finally off from a distance we saw the band of marauders pulling out of Calhoun falls who just left the Savanah Grill about 15 miles from Abbeville.
